2021 Hyundai Santa Fe and Elantra win IIHS Best Safety Pick award

In early 2021, the Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS) listed 90 vehicles qualified for a Best security choice, or Best security choice + price. The Hyundai Elantra sedan and the Santa Fe SUV for 2021 were not on that initial list, but both models now win the IIHS ‘second-highest award, the Best security choice. However, that honor depends on the LED headlights that are part of the package.

For the Santa Fe 2021, that shouldn’t be a problem. All five versions of the SUV include LED headlights as standard equipment, with projector-style LEDs standard on Limited, Calligraphy and Calligraphy 2.5T AWD models. It’s a different story for the Elantra, as LED headlights are only available on the Limited trim level, which serves as the flagship for the Elantra lineup. The lights aren’t even optional add-ons for the N Line, SEL, or the base SE model, which means the only way to get a new Elantra with the Best security choice the note is to spend $ 25,450 for the Limited. At this price, LED lights are at least standard equipment.

“These high ratings demonstrate our commitment to safety,” said Brian Latouf, safety manager at Hyundai Motor North America. “Being an industry leader in safety and IIHS accolades is fundamental to our brand, and we continually strive to provide exceptional passenger safety to our customers.

With the latest awards, Hyundai is currently offering nine vehicles that earn either a Best security choice or Best security choice+ price, although as mentioned earlier not all trim levels are eligible. In addition to good or acceptable headlight ratings, vehicles must achieve good ratings in all IIHS crash tests while also being available with front crash prevention technology that ranks advanced or better for occupants and pedestrians.

The Elantra and Santa Fe are significantly updated for 2021, with fresh styling and updated technology in every model line.
