German luxury goods maker Montblanc is opening a new museum this year, “inviting visitors from around the world to experience the power of writing”.

The design of the building by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos was created as a “homage to the historical form of packaging for Montblanc’s writing instruments”.

The Spanish architecture firm, headquartered in Berlin, designed the 3,600 square meter project to represent the values that define the Montblanc brand: “simplicity, sensuality and timelessness”.

Estimated at nearly AU$30 million, the museum is made up of a “sophisticated sequence of spaces on three levels, articulated around an illuminated central atrium”.

The museum will present a permanent exhibition Inspire Writing: Exhibition featuring original writing by iconic characters such as Ernest Hemingway, Frida Kahlo and Jackie Chan.

It will also showcase more than 410 Montblanc writing instruments – past and present – and provide an immersive experience that will give guests a behind-the-scenes look at the team that makes the writing instruments and how its prestigious nibs are made.

Montblanc Haus will also house a writing workshop where the museum will teach the art of writing through classes, including calligraphy, hand lettering and creative writing. It offers customers the opportunity to “discover the potential of their own writing with Montblanc’s writing instruments”.

Montblanc has been teasing the museum’s opening for some time, releasing a companion series last year called “Montblanc Signed” detailing its origins through short videos.

In early 2021, the pen maker also released a book, Inspire Writing, explore the history and importance of writing and the culture of literacy. It delves into Montblanc’s heritage since its founding in 1906 and follows the company’s history, including showing blueprints of luxury fountain pens, archival footage and still photographs.

Although the exact date of the official opening has not yet been announced, according to the website, general ticket sales begin in May.
