How to download and install Apple’s “San Francisco Pro” font on your Mac

Apple reintroduced its popular San Francisco font in 2014, delivering it to developers for use in watchOS. Initially, the San Francisco font was only available on watchOS, but was quickly ported to OS X El Capitan, iOS 9, and more. If you want to download the latest San Francisco (SF) font or its variations, you can use these instructions.

San Francisco Police History

San Francisco was one of the original fonts shipped on Apple’s first Macintosh computers. The wild-looking font was designed by legendary designer Susan Kare, known for the beautiful fonts and icons that powered the first Macintosh user interface.

The San Francisco police mimicked a ransom demand in its first iteration and was used in both early Apple demos and flyers. Unfortunately, the original San Francisco font was a bitmap font that was obsolete with the Macintosh 7 system, which left the bitmap font and switched to TrueType fonts.

Switch to 2014, and the San Francisco font has been redesigned for the Apple Watch. The new San Francisco font offers a clean, modern look that is highly readable on Apple mobile and desktop devices. Its generous spacing makes it ideal for small Apple Watch and iPhone screens.
