Sam Kogon has shared a new single, “Barbed Wire”, premiering on Indie88. The track is part of the announcement for his forthcoming self-titled EP, which will be released on April 1.
Today’s premiere is a catchy song with a country sensibility. Sam Kogon’s vocals take the lead in this dreamy, stomp-worthy country rocker, which serves as the perfect preview for the upcoming EP.
“‘Barbed Wire’ is a song about accepting love, refusing love, unrequited love, infatuation and coming out of the closet,” says Sam Kogon. “It’s inspired by two friends who exchange songs they write as coded love letters. One friend wants their love to come off the page and the other friend can only express their true feelings in song. Running away with or from someone who isn’t emotionally available can entangle you in the barbed wire fences they put up at the first sign of vulnerability, so I chose that as the song title.

“The only friend trying to move on is asking (rhetorically) ‘Is this love? Is this love? I need to know now… and could you even tell me now,” Sam Kogon continues. “They already know the answer: Sometimes there’s no happy ending or closure; Sometimes we burn like tires, and that’s okay.
Sam Kogon’s upcoming EP was recorded and produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) in New Jersey.
