Monotype, Knockout and Gotham font families express new brand identity for NYC Pride

NYC Pride is Heritage of Pride’s signature event, with a proven legacy of unity, protest, advocacy and fun. Its new brand goal, “to inspire and empower every LGBTQIA person to love and proudly live their truth,” is fueled by the new visual identity features, where Knockout and Gotham look bold and direct, yet warm, to the brand across all platforms, including website and social media channels.

This visual identity is based on the two remarkable typefaces of Hoefler&Co., which joined the Monotype portfolio in September 2021. Knockout’s enduring fighting spirit, with its roots in eclectic 19th century broadside typography, perfectly balances Gotham’s friendly openness, a contemporary take on a lettering style that’s essentially New York and whose elementary shapes have been designed to express as wide and inclusive a range of voices as possible. Leveraging the Gotham family, NYC Pride joins a list of other notable uses, including by Barack Obama 2008 presidential campaign.

“Working on this major revitalization of NYC Pride with Lippincott is a true ‘passionate project’ for Monotype, deploying type through elements of design, location and identity,” said Sara Soskolne, Creative Type Director at Monotype. “We’re thrilled that Knockout and Gotham are helping to tell the story of NYC Pride’s legacy and inclusivity through typography, while signaling that it’s more than just an annual celebration, it’s a lasting legacy.”

Jenifer Lehkerpartner, Design at Lippincott, added, “NYC Pride is recognized globally as a beacon of safety, community and ally, but also as a symbol of protest and activism. Monotype understands this and has helped our cause with the Gotham Police and Knockout magnificently. families, which truly convey the spirit and heritage of the brand.”

“Pride started as a protest, and we wanted to capture a typographic voice reminiscent of the bold, eye-catching posters used by protesters. Designed in New York, Knockout and Gotham pay homage to the brand’s roots, while delivering the visual boldness needed to amplify the voice of the community.”
