The best romantic anime to watch after the fruit basket

With the final season of Fruits Basket coming to an end, here are four more excellent romantic animes to fill the void.

The era of Basket of fruits is finally over, with its series finale recently aired on Crunchyroll and Funimation. The original anime came out in 2001, but it only lasted one season. TMS Entertainment kicked off a reboot in 2019, which ran for three seasons before ending in late June 2021.

Basket of fruits is a cult favorite among romantic anime fans with its gripping storyline, serious character development, and truly heartwarming storyline. Now that it’s over, fans can be left hanging for their fill of romantic anime. Don’t worry – there are a lot of anime similar to Basket of fruits who can fill the void.

A more recent anime from the spring 2021 lineup, Koikimo follows the growing relationship between Ichika, a high school student, and Ryo, the older brother of her best friend who works as a salaried employee. Similar to a few other romantic series, Koikimo speaks of a relationship with an age gap (10 years), but while it is not comfortable for all viewers to watch, the subject is treated with tact and respect.

Ryo is saved by Ichika one fateful afternoon, and he becomes absolutely enamored. Meanwhile, Ichika wants absolutely nothing to do with Ryo, given that he’s her best friend’s brother. But Rio, her best friend, is actually supporting their budding relationship. It’s kind of a push-and-pull romance, with Ryo constantly vying for Ichika’s attention and love. But it’s a gradual, endearing hate turned love, not so different from the way Kyo in Basket of fruits Reluctantly accepts his feelings for Tohru.

Blue spring walk

Closer to the Basket of fruits atmosphere, Blue spring walk is a romantic high school anime that’s as healthy as it is emotional. Futaba, a teenage girl who feels her life is uninteresting, meets her old childhood sweetheart, Kou, at their high school. But Kou is a completely different person than when he was a child – now he’s cold, indifferent, and distant. Futaba discovers that this change in character is due to the death of his mother in her childhood.

Over time, she helps Kou deal with her grief as a friend and slowly begins to fall in love with him again. Blue spring walk is a story of positive change and growth from trauma, just like Basket of fruits. He uses bonding and friendship as the anchor points for a developing romantic relationship and really focuses on emotions, not just winning.

Sing “yesterday” to me

Sing “yesterday” to me takes a more grown-up approach to romance, following two sets of relationships that develop between them. Protagonist Rikuo has resigned himself to a dark and uninspiring life when his routine is disrupted by a young girl named Haru who comes to visit him at work. Simultaneously, Rikuo struggles with his feelings for an old college friend and crush, Shinako.

Unfortunately for Rikuo, Shinako faces his own emotional hurdles in overcoming a deceased ex-boyfriend. This boyfriend’s younger brother, Rō, is also in love with Shinako. It’s a jumble of emotions between the four characters, but a very mature look at the complexity of human relationships.

The anime focuses on how love fully takes hold of a person and how it can change so much, even from a tiny action by the right person. Although the principle may seem complicated, Sing “yesterday” to me comes out with grace and perfectly balances the two relationships.

Although it has more of a sci-fi touch, Orange is an extremely compelling romantic anime. He follows Naho, a high school student who begins to receive letters from her future self, warning him of a new transfer student named Kakeru. After some of the letters’ predictions come true, Naho begins to do more. Gradually, because of the letters and her own self-interest, she gets closer to Kakeru and begins to spend time with him both inside and outside of his group of friends. Without revealing too much, Orange balances the romantic aspect really well with the mystery of the letters.

The development of relationship between Kakeru and Naho is slow but incredibly significant, and much more than a typical high school romance. Orange is one of those anime that will be forever remembered by viewers because of its memorable relationships and unique history. Although it may be far from Basket of fruits, fans will have their appetite for romance fully sated with this one.
