One of the most interesting ways to take the temperature of today’s music environment is to grab a pair of 2.5x reading glasses and start examining the lineup for Coachella’s annual lineup.
The festival is back after a few years – COVID, right? font size given to artists on official poster. The bigger the font, the more important you are. If you are listed in a small font, you are a “green banana”, an act that has the potential to grow into something bigger (i.e. mature) for the festival and over the next 12 month.
The other thing we need to pay attention to is the genres that are featured. Once again, hip-hop and pop dominate – which continue to be the zeitgeist in America – but there are a few nods to fans of rock and alternative (et al- rock-ish). Nice to see King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, IDLES, Spiritualized, Canada’s Caribou, Maneskin, Fatboy Slim, Japanese Breakfast, Chicano Batman, Phoebe Bridgers, Girl in Red and a few others. You can also put Billie Eilish in this category if you want. Unfortunately, Rage Against the Machine won’t be there as previously stated.
When Coachella started over 20 years ago, it was an alternative rock concert in its own right.
How times have changed, huh?
